This one was a very pleasant surprise. Great read. Spoiler alert.This one starts in China where a deadly infection got away from them. The Chinese figured if the were going to suffer then so was everyone else. They launched and EMP at America and it worked.Jake and his wife Samantha live just outside of Tampa Florida. Jake was fifty-four years old and an Army veteran. He served twenty-six years most in the Army reserve. He had enlisted right out of high school and his first Army job was as an M60 tank driver. He loved the tanks where he learned the value of teamwork, and to trust in his fellow crew members.Jake made Sgt. during his four year enlistment as an armored crewman. After that stint he used his GI Bill benefits and went to a Pennsylvania College where he joined the ROTC and made the rank of 2nd Lt. He was deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. He was injured there and then after healing he retired from the military. He really didn't like the Army but he loved the friends he made while in the Army. He has a fantastic wife, Samantha and two great kids who are now in college in the Orlando area.On the day of the Event a Friday. Jake was a volunteer a the Veterans Hospital in North Tampa. Jake drives a 1970 Dodge W-200 Power wagon 4X4 he calls Zeus. His vehicle will run when many others won't.Jake usually, using a golf cart, ferries Vets all over the Veterans Hospital grounds. Its something he enjoys doing. He enjoys it till his cart just stops. Jakes pocket radio quits as well. The walkie talkies quit working as well. As a new Lt. he had attended a class that dealt with EMP's. Jake knows someone has attacked the USA with an EMP. His truck is one of the few that will run. He heads for home.Samantha also realizes something unusual has happened as she's waiting for Jake.In Orlando Jazlyn and Cole Jakes two kids also realize something has happened and they need to head for their Aunts house. Jake has made sure they both have bikes with baskets to haul everything they need. The BOB bags have everything they will need to get to their Aunt's where Jake will pick them up.So begins one damned fine read.This one has Jake, Samantha, Cole, Jazlyn, Jordan who is Jazlyn's roommate, the kids who will have it tough getting to their Aunt's, Jake who knows people will want what he and his family and the MAG have once they figure out what really happened, most folks don't have much food or water in their houses and that's what they will need to survive, Jake is a prepper and has guns, ammo, food, water and everything else he and his family need, the member of the MAG group are also well provisioned, the Haug family decide to take advantage of the EMP strike and throw themselves into conflict with Jake and his crew, a Jake who is the leader and will do whatever it takes to protect those with him.Five Stars for a good read and I hope there is a number 2 He gives you a disclaimer earlier on when he talks about turning on rush Limbaugh ( glad were all safe from him now).Hard to find good survival lit for people who don't have an ideology of fear, hatred, and telling others what to do.
